Sudah dibuka sejak tahun 2010, Kalibiru merupakan salah satu pelopor wisata alam dengan gardu pandang yang belakangan banyak bermunculan di DIY dan Bandung. Selain menawarkan lanskap perbuktan Menoreh yang hijau dan luas, dari gardu pandang pengunjung juga bisa melihat Waduk Sermo, waduk terluas di Yogyakarta yang saat ini juga menjadi salah satu tujuan wisata favorit di Kulon Progo. Bila datang di pagi hari, pengunjung bisa melihat perbukitan Menoreh dan Waduk Sermo yang berselimutkan kabut, sedangkan saat senja bisa melihat matahari terbenam. Salah satu pengelola desa wisata Kalibiru, Sudadi menyampaikan, saat hari biasa dengan tiket masuk Rp pengunjung Desa Wisata Kalibiru mencapai 400 - 600 orang. Sementara saat akhir pekan dengan tiket masuk Rp pengunjungnya bisa mencapai - orang. "Desa Wisata Kalibiru merupakan kegiatan usaha dari kelompok tani. 75 persen warga di sini juga terserap dalam pengelolaan wisata Kalibiru untuk menambah penghasilan selain bertani," tutur Sudadi di Desa Wisata Kalibiru, Sabtu 4/11. Ada enam gardu pandang di atas pohon yang disediakan dengan berbagai bentuk sebagai spot untuk foto. Masing-masing gardu pandang tersebut bisa dicapai dengan menyusuri jalan setapak dan anak tangga. Meski tersebar di berbagai tempat, pemandangan utama seluruh gardu pandang tersebut menghadap ke Waduk Sermo. Karena harus dipasang alat keselamatan oleh pemandu, pengunjung yang ingin foto atau duduk-duduk santai di gardu pandang dikenakan biaya tambahan sebesar Rp sampai Rp Bila ingin lebih menantang, ada juga fasilitas flying fox dan jembatan gantung dengan tiket Rp Kalau pun tidak ingin naik ke gardu pandang, setiap sudut di kawasan ini juga menyuguhkan pemandangan yang sama bagusnya. Saat ini memang belum ada angkutan umum yang langsung menuju Desa Wisata Kali Biru. Pengunjung biasanya menyewa mobil dari kota, atau menggunakan sepeda motor. Bila menggunakan bus, pemberhentian terakhirnya di Waduk Sermo lantaran medan yang harus dilalui cukup tajam dan berkelok. I did not mind paying the entrance fee but what really started to annoy me was that you needed to pay to get it but you also needed to additionally pay to go on each individual platform. even though there was supposed to be set pries for the platforms, when I asked how much the platform would cost for me and my four-person group to go on, the man said a price that was tripled to the one on the sign. it was completely ridiculous, and he was speaking to me as if I was completely blurred of the situation. the view is amazing but the use of space was not good. I understand the monopoly that this place is, but I would not recommend this as a tourist spot or a 'go-to' place in Jogja. Entrance fee is 20k rupiah, and there are many photo spots for you to choose. Taking photos at photo spots require additional fees ranging from 10k to 35k rupiah. If you decide to purchase the photos taken from their cameras, it's additional 5k rupiah per soft copy. Basically it's money, money and more money. To be honest, photos taken from my phone is way better than from their cameras because they use flash, which make the pictures looked over exposed. It was my decision to visit Kalibiru following online recommendations about what to visit in Yogya. The journey to Kalibiru is long and arduous, and a bit of a challenge with steep windy roads near the top. The basic premise of the site is not to wander around a national park but to follow a shortish trail of about 10-12 locations spots at which you can climb onto platforms and then have your photo taken doing something incredible for Instagram. You pay a fee to go in and then separate fees at each "spot" where there are security people who assist you to use the "spot" safely and take your photo leaping in the air or whatever you want to do. Nearby on the route there are a series of "warung"/cafes offering snacks and drinks. The views from the site are interesting but this is an absolute waste of your time and money unless you are an avid Instagram fan. It is better to spend your time at Prambanan and Borobudur which are 5* top sites or in one of the charming villages near Borobudur visiting a school or a small craft factory and admiring the rice fields and crop production. Please avoid Kalibiru. And so after a long drive from the city, we came here. Lots of walking to get to the instagrammable-worthy spots. These are paid activities but no one forces you to participate. It was fun to watch people who loathe heights overcome their fears to get the pictures they wanted - given the picturesque backgrounds. I fell into the category of folks content enough to appreciate the scenery and other folks willing to challenge themselves.....and wistfully wonder later if I should have also tour guides were patient and attentive in the event the walking and climbing would take their toll but we all thankfully survived but not without some expected panting.
